The Secret of Monkey Island is a graphical adventure game created by Lucasarts and released in 1990. It is the first in the Monkey Island series, and was the fifth unique game to use the SCUMM engine.

The game stars a would-be pirate by the name of Guybrush Threepwood who washes up on Mêlée Island. The game begins as Guybrush tries to prove himself as a pirate, but he soon gets wrapped up in an adveture that takes him to the mysterious Monkey Island to do battle with the ghost pirate LeChuck and save the governor of Mêlée Island, Elaine Marley.

The game uses a point-and-click interface in which the player chooses a verb from a list of twelve to use with an element in the environment. In the CD-ROM version of the game released in 1992, the verb list is reduced to nine, with several commands that are rarely used in the floppy disk version removed.
